    Helen Oyeyemi and Border Identities: Contesting Western Representations of Immigrants through Transnational Literature

    Oyeyemi is a Nigerian-British writer whose writing, like other immigrant authors\u27, participates in a dialogue about and contestation of essentialized immigrant and ethnic identities that are a result of global and local processes. Her writing produces counter-narratives in which immigrant identities are multiple, conflicting, intersectional, and most of all self-represented. This paper explores readings of Oyeyemi accompanied by the following: an examination of globalization and flows of migration; the connections of national epistemologies through media to processes like migration: how literary canon has excluded transnational fiction from the mainstream, thereby decreasing the ability of multi-ethnic and im/migrant writers to represent themselves successfully; and finally the literary shift into a more nuanced understanding of multiculturalism, diaspora, nations, and borders through persistent critiques and re-interpretations by minority writers

    Water bath calorimetric study of excess heat generation in 'resonant transfer' plasmas

    Water bath calorimetry was used to demonstrate one more peculiar phenomenon associated with a certain class of mixed gas plasmas termed resonant transfer, or RT plasmas. Specifically, He/H2 (10%) (500 mTorr), Ar/H2 (10%) (500 mTorr), and H2O(g) (500 and 200 mTorr) plasmas generated with an Evenson microwave cavity consistently yielded on the order of 50% more heat than non RT plasma (controls) such as He, Kr, Kr/H2 (10%), under identical conditions of gas flow, pressure, and microwave operating conditions. The excess power density of RT plasmas was of the order 10 W / cm-3. In earlier studies with these same RT plasmas it was demonstrated that other unusual features were present including dramatic broadening of the hydrogen Balmer series lines, unique vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lines, and in the case of water plasmas, population inversion of the hydrogen excited states. Both the current results and the earlier results are completely consistent with the existence of a hitherto unknown exothermic chemical reaction, such as that predicted by Mills, occurring in RT plasmas.Comment: 30 pages, 2 tables, 5 figure

    A critical analysis of the hydrino model

    Recently, spectroscopic and calorimetric observations of hydrogen plasmas and chemical reactions with them have been interpreted as evidence for the existence of electronic states of the hydrogen atom with a binding energy of more than 13.6 eV. The theoretical basis for such states, that have been dubbed hydrinos, is investigated. We discuss both, the novel deterministic model of the hydrogen atom, in which the existence of hydrinos was predicted, and standard quantum mechanics. Severe inconsistencies in the deterministic model are pointed out and the incompatibility of hydrino states with quantum mechanics is reviewed.Comment: 9 page

    Teachers matter: feelings of school connectedness and positive youth development among Coos County youth

    Students who feel positively about their education, have a sense of belonging in school, and maintain good relationships with students and staff generally feel connected to their schools. In fact, 63 percent of Coos youth report feeling this way. It is one of the most important factors in promoting socio-emotional well-being and positive youth development, according to authors Nena Stracuzzi and Meghan Mills. Their research, using surveys of Coos students, shows that students who feel more connected to their schools usually get better grades, have higher self-esteem, use fewer substances, and engage in aggressive behaviors less frequently. Their latest brief also shows that Coos County students who feel their teachers are supportive of them are often more connected to their schools

    Jesus, social reform and virtuoso religion: a study of Jesus’ practice and teaching concerning wealth and poverty on the basis of selected Gospel passages and social-scientific approaches

    This study demonstrates, by the application of a selection of social science models on a selection of gospel passages, the usefulness of those models for better understanding the teachings of the Jesus movement on wealth and poverty and what Jesus hoped to achieve by these teachings. It shows that sociological models are generally useful for approaching the gospels because they facilitate understanding by formulating new questions about ancient material and highlighting perhaps previously unnoticed themes or concerns. It further offers the opinion that the Virtuoso Religion model is the most useful for doing this and as such will be the most useful for providing an understanding of what Jesus envisioned for the future of society in anticipation of the imminent Kingdom. The model supports Jesus’ preaching on wealth and day-to-day expressions of those opinions as methods by which he might influence the attitudes of others, especially the rich and powerful, adjusting their focus from love of wealth to love for God and neighbour

    High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has been used to study the structure of dislocations in single crystal superalloy samples that have been subjected to conditions that favour the primary creep regime. The study has revealed the detailed structure of extended a2〈112〉 dislocations as they shear the γ′ precipitates during creep. These dislocations dissociate in a manner that is consistent with predictions made using the phase-field model of dislocations and also suggests the importance of the reordering process during their movement. The shearing done by the a〈1 1 2〉 dislocations was also found to distort the γ/γ′ interface, changing its appearance from linear to a "saw tooth" pattern. Another important observation was the segregation of alloying elements with a high atomic mass to the stacking faults, presumably to reduce their energies during shear. Numerous a2〈110〉 dissociated dislocations were also observed in the γ channels of the superalloy. The high resolution provided by the STEM imaging enables one to study the high-energy faults that are usually difficult to observe in conventional weak-beam TEM, such as complex intrinsic and extrinsic stacking faults in the γ′ and intrinsic stacking faults in the γ, and to make estimates of their energies
